Recently, the Switch scene has been a little bit quiet but now, it’s back to normal with three notable pieces of news. In this article, we’ll be looking at further developments relating to Switch’s Android port, Dark Souls Ascension Mod coming to the console and a mod to get full-quality audio on Witcher 3 without any performance loss!
While the Nintendo DSi has been out for a little over half a decade and it received its last firmware update in 2012, you could only hack it with a digital-only application (from a store that’s closed) or hardmodding until now. However, things have just changed thanks to the unexpected release of Memory Pit by shutterbug2000!
As it often happens, firmware updates break CFW compatibility and FW 7.0.0 is no exception even though its keys were cracked within hours. Fast forwarding about 3 weeks and a half, FW 7.0.0’s days of not having a CFW ended as Atmosphère 0.8.4 got released with support for both 7.0.0 and 7.0.1!
For quite a few years, rhtyhm games, like the Project Diva series, have been pretty popular and the Switch has its own share of official titles. However, none of these are as expandable as osu! so now, the homebrew community stepped in to rectify that along with releasing an update to Atmosphere.
Recently, the Nintendo Switch scene has been on fire (again) with many things to be excited about! First with CFW running on FW 6.2.0 after a few days of release and now, with overclocking in emulators.
A video about the discovery of the BootROM bug, based on the talk given by Andy "Glitching The Switch". We talk about how the Switch boots, how the hardware coould be attacked, how a vulnerability in the switch was found and what exactly it does.
Nintendo dropped firmware update 6.2.0 for its Switch console. As often, the only official changelog states this update improves stability.
On the scene side, however, Word on the street is that this update breaks Custom Firmware compatibility, for all known CFWs. (That is, of course, for people who are running a CFW and choose to update, a very strange move in my book but who am I to judge.)
Nowadays, the Nintendo Switch scene has quite a few active developers and as a result, many interesting pieces of homebrew are surfacing. In recent days, we got a Half-Life 1 port and a patched YouTube app with extra features along with an Atmosphère update!
Hacker KapuccinoHeck has shared some findings about the new NES emulator that is part of Nintendo’s new “Switch online” offering. Apparently, it’s fairly easy to load your own Roms (on a hacked Switch) and play them directly, which the hacker demonstrated by loading Kirby’s Adventure (video below).
Scene hacker Hexkyz reports that Team Xecuter’s recently released Custom Firmware for the Nintendo Switch embeds some code designed to intentionally brick a console, if it detects the user is trying to bypass the license restrictions. (For example by trying to run the CFW on a different console than the license allows).
